Dear reader,

We hope that you are all having a great summer and look forward to seeing you this month!  Please be advised that our usual meeting area will be occupied, we ask that you join us downstairs at the library. Also, a friendly reminder that all future meetings will now be held from 6pm- 8pm.

We would like to let our members know that we have polystyrene equipment available. Polystyrene offers unmatchable insulation qualities for overwintering bees here in the North. We find that bees require less stores to get through winter in these hives as well. If you are interested please send us an email.

Links to stay connected via Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ are located at the top of the newsletter, thank you for joining us!

If you have any topics, ideas, or questions, feel free to contact us at beegroup@hvhives.com. Please whitelist our email address to ensure proper mail delivery from Hudson Valley Hives.

August 18th Topic - "Fool-proof" Queen Introduction

We will discuss our preferred method of queen introduction with the use of a double screened board. The advantage of this method is, unlike most other methods, you always have the original queen to fall back on. Ensuring the new queen is accepted and a quality layer before removing the original queen is our goal.

Video of the Month

Here is a fascinating video on skep beekeeping that I think you will find very interesting.

Hudson Valley Hives is a beekeeping group that  meets at the Olive Free Library on a monthly basis and discuss all things beekeeping. The meeting starts with a short seasonal appropriate presentation followed by general open discussion. It is very informal and we welcome anyone interested to participate. If you are just thinking about getting started in beekeeping, a new beekeeper, or a seasoned beekeeper, you will benefit from the group discussions.
