Greetings Hello,

BeeGroup October Meeting: Annual Honey Competition

When:
  • Tuesday, October 21, 6:00 PM
Where:
  • Olive Free Library (downstairs), 4033 Route 28A, West Shokan, NY 12494
Join us for a friendly tasting competition showcasing this year’s honey. Please bring a small jar (a couple of ounces) of your 2025 honey to share. Feel free to bring multiple samples if you had more than one crop.

No bees yet, or didn’t get any honey this year? No worries—please come and help judge! We need as many discerning palates as possible to choose the winner. We’ll also discuss winter preparation and answer questions. Let’s close out the season with a bang!

Looking ahead:
The annual Intro to Beekeeping course is scheduled for 2026. Please share the flyer below with anyone who may be interested.

Recent Presentation:
I was the guest speaker at the Northern Dutchess Beekeepers September meeting.

EPA-registered Pesticide Products Approved for Use Against Varroa Mites in Bee Hives

EPA is also dedicated to supporting the development of novel solutions for Varroa mite control, such as double stranded RNA (dsRNA) products and other emerging technologies. For example, in September 2025, EPA released a final registration decision for the new pesticide active ingredient, Vadescana, a dsRNA, for control against Varroa mites in honey bee hives. Vadescana works through a mechanism called RNA interference, which prevents the expression of a specific gene that the Varroa mite needs to survive. The effects of Vadescana are highly specific to Varroa mites, and it does not affect humans or other non-target organisms, including bees and threatened or endangered species.

Veterans find healing and skills through beekeeping

A new buzz is in the air at the Cleveland Botanical Garden, thanks to an 8-week beekeeping course for Veterans in the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System’s Whole Health program.
The course, launched earlier this summer, is a partnership between VA’s Innovations and Whole Health teams, the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Youth Bee Works, a local group focused on community beekeeping education.
