Swarm Cells Can Be Concealed—A Case for Queen Management

Swarm cells aren’t always found hanging off the bottom of the frame.That’s why simply removing swarm cells is not a reliable method for controlling swarming. A much more effective approach is to move the queen. Here are two examples I encountered where the bees “hid” their swarm cells. In each example, the photos on the left (1 & 3) show the frames as they appeared when removed from the hive, while the photos on the right (2 & 4) show the swarm cells once they’ve been uncovered.

USDA Researchers Find Viruses from Miticide Resistant Parasitic Mites are Cause of Recent Honey Bee Colony Collapses

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) are helping American beekeepers solve the mystery behind a widespread honey bee colony collapse and its debilitating effects on U.S. agriculture. Researchers have submitted a manuscript to a scientific journal for peer review based on our research findings that identified high levels of deformed wing virus A and B and acute bee paralysis in all recently USDA-sampled bees.

Bee Venom: Composition and Anticancer Properties

Among the various natural compounds used in alternative and Oriental medicine, toxins isolated from different organisms have had their application for many years, and Apis mellifera venom has been studied the most extensively. Numerous studies dealing with the positive assets of bee venom (BV) indicated its beneficial properties.
