Greetings Hello,

BeeGroup July Gathering: Hands-On Apiary Session

When: Tuesday, July 15th, 5:45 PM

Where: Raecine’s Apiary, 1915 County Road 3, Olivebridge, NY
Continuing our summer tradition, we’ll be meeting in person for a hands-on session—this time at Raecine’s home apiary! Join us as we roll up our sleeves and get back into the hives.

Since last month’s unpredictable weather kept attendance down—and we ended up happily sidetracked by another topic—we’ll be dedicating this session to the discussion of virgin queens.

This Month’s Focus: Unveiling the Queen — “There Can Be Only One” We’ll take a brief dive into the fascinating world of “virginistas” and the remarkable journey colonies undertake to become queen-right. Learn how to recognize when your hive has a plan: we’ll share the five telltale signs your colony is preparing for a new beginning.

What to bring:
  • Bee jacket, veil, gloves, and any protective gear you have
  • If you’re new or missing something, I’ll have extra equipment available
Come for the learning, stay for the bees, and let’s make the most of July together!

I've seen plenty of bees return with milkweed stuck to their feet and have also seen dead bees on milkweed. But recently I actually got to witness the struggle.

How robotic hives and AI are lowering the risk of bee colony collapse

Lifting up the hood of a Beewise hive feels more like you're getting ready to examine the engine of a car than visit with a few thousand pollinators.
The unit—dubbed a BeeHome—is an industrial upgrade from the standard wooden beehives, all clad in white metal and solar panels. Inside sits a high-tech scanner and robotic arm powered by artificial intelligence. Roughly 300,000 of these units are in use across the U.S., scattered across fields of almond, canola, pistachios and other crops that require pollination to grow.

How a genetic tug-of-war decides the fate of a honey bee

Despite having identical genetic instructions, female honey bee larvae can develop into either long-lived reproductive queens or short-lived sterile workers who help rear their sisters rather than laying their own eggs. Now, an interdisciplinary team led by researchers at Penn State has uncovered the molecular mechanisms that control how the conflict between genes inherited from the father and the mother determine the larva’s fate.
