Greetings Hello,
BeeGroup August Gathering: Hands-On Apiary Session
When: Tuesday, August 19th, 5:45 PM
Where: West Shokan Apiary, Weidner Drive, West Shokan, NY (Turn left into the field after passing between barns)
This Month’s Focus: Preparing for Winter
Join us at the apiary for an in-person meeting to discuss winter preparation plans for our hives. We’ll review where everyone stands with varroa mite treatments, talk about different treatment options, and discuss the best hive configurations to help our bees thrive through the winter. This is a great opportunity to share tips, ask questions, and get ready for the colder months together.
- Bee jacket, veil, gloves, and any protective gear you have
- If you’re new or missing something, I’ll have extra equipment available
Come for the learning, stay for the bees, and let’s make the most of August together!

Meet Maple: Former K-9 now beekeeper at MSU
Meet former K-9 Maple. She made a big career switch earlier this year—from a human remains detection dog to a beekeeper at Michigan State University’s Pollinator Performance Center.
The friendly brown and white dog, with a long tongue that hangs out of her mouth dons her own beekeeping suit and uses her powerful nose to sniff out danger.

Continuous release of oregano oil effectively and safely controls Varroa destructor infestations in honey bee colonies in a northern climate
The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor is responsible for the death of millions of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies worldwide. Testing potential miticide compounds with different delivery methods that effectively control V. destructor and have low toxicity for honey bees is crucial to manage this parasite in hives. We determined the varroacide efficacy of three natural compounds delivered to hives with three application methods over a 4-week period.

Here’s a double trap-out I’m currently working on at a church hall. There are two colonies in the wall, about six feet apart. This is the second double trap-out I’ve had this year.
