This Month’s Focus: Winter Prep Progress Review: As winter approaches, let’s continue our preparations together. This month’s session will focus on assessing our collective progress in getting our hives ready for the colder months ahead.
Discussion Points:
  • Varroa mite treatment status and results
  • Current hive configurations and adjustments needed
  • Remaining winter preparation tasks
  • Tips and best practices for seasonal transition
What to Bring:
  • Bee jacket or suit
  • Veil
  • Gloves
  • Other personal protective equipment
Note: Extra gear will be available for newcomers or those missing items.

Scientists found the missing nutrients bees need — Colonies grew 15-fold


A new study led by the University of Oxford in collaboration with Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, University of Greenwich, and the Technical University of Denmark could provide a cost-effective and sustainable solution to help tackle the devastating decline in honeybees. An engineered food supplement, designed to provide essential compounds found in plant pollen, was found to significantly enhance colony reproduction.

N.C. researchers fighting honey bee extinction with new technology northern climate

A pesky parasite is impacting bees, threatening colonies all over the world.

Bees keep our crops pollinated and now their keepers are looking for a way to stop this killer. Honey bees are a key contributor in the state’s largest industry.
“Part of our goal really is shoring up food security, crop production in North Carolina,” said Kaira Wagoner, a research scientist at UNC Greensboro.
Wagoner and her team are keeping the buzz about bees going from the honeycomb to the fume hoods.
Wagoner’s passion is protecting one of the planet’s most prolific pollinators.

It is that time of year when Yellowjackets can put a hurting on your hives. Be diligent and keep an eye out for them around your hives. This year seems to be the worst we have encountered in many seasons. This is just one of three traps after a few days.
